Aliskiren

What is Aliskiren?

Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor used in the treatment of hypertension. It works by blocking the action of the enzyme renin, which plays a key role in regulating blood pressure through the regulation of angiotensin and aldosterone levels. Aliskiren has been shown to reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension.

What is Aliskiren used for?

Aliskiren, also known as Tekturna, is a direct renin inhibitor that was approved by the US FDA in 2007 for the treatment of hypertension. It works by blocking the action of renin, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the body’s natural production of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor involved in blood pressure regulation. By inhibiting this pathway, aliskiren helps to relax blood vessels and increase blood flow, thereby reducing blood pressure.

Aliskiren is typically used as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents to treat hypertension in adults. It has been shown to be effective in lowering sitting systolic and diastolic blood pressures in patients with essential hypertension. Aliskiren’s mechanism of action differs from that of other antihypertensive medications, making it an attractive option for certain patients. However, its use is generally limited due to concerns about increased potassium levels (hyperkalemia) associated with aliskiren therapy. As a result, careful monitoring of serum potassium levels and kidney function is required when using this medication.
