Azilsartan-amlodipine

What is Azilsartan-amlodipine?

A pharmaceutical combination product. Azilsartan-amlodipine, also known as Edarbi HCT, is a fixed-dose combination medication containing azilsartan and amlodipine. It belongs to the class of angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARBs) and calcium channel blockers (CCBs), respectively. Azilsartan-amlodipine is used in adults for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension).

What is Azilsartan-amlodipine used for?

Azilsartan-amlodipine, also known as Edarbi HCT or Twynsta, is an oral antihypertensive medication. It is a combination of two active ingredients: azilsartan and amlodipine. Azilsartan belongs to the class of angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARBs), while amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker (CCB). The combination of these two drugs was designed to provide additive therapeutic effects, allowing for more effective blood pressure control in patients.

As an ARB, azilsartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II on its receptors, which leads to vasodilation and decreased peripheral resistance. This results in lowered blood pressure. Amlodipine, as a CCB, further contributes to the reduction in blood pressure by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle cells, thereby relaxing arterial walls and reducing blood vessel tone. The combination of azilsartan and amlodipine has been shown to be effective in lowering seated systolic and diastolic blood pressures in patients with hypertension.
