Besifloxacin

What is Besifloxacin?

Besifloxacin is an ophthalmic antiseptic and antibacterial medication used in the treatment of conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and other eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It belongs to the class of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and works by inhibiting bacterial DNA replication, ultimately leading to the death of the bacterial cell. Besifloxacin is applied topically to the affected area in the form of an ophthalmic solution or suspension and is available over-the-counter as well as by prescription.

What is Besifloxacin used for?

Besifloxacin is an antibiotic ointment used topically to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and external infections of the eye, such as blepharitis. It belongs to the class of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, which are a group of antimicrobial agents that target bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes.

The mechanism of action of besifloxacin involves inhibiting the synthesis of new bacterial DNA through the inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. This prevents the bacteria from replicating and eventually leads to their death, thereby treating the infection. Besifloxacin is usually applied as a 0.6% ointment twice daily for seven days in adults with external infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis or blepharitis.

Besifloxacin has been found to be effective and safe in the treatment of bacterial ocular infections caused by susceptible strains.
