Candesartan-olmesartan

What is Candesartan-olmesartan?

Candesartan-olmesartan, also known as Entresto, is an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor. It is used to treat heart failure and hypertension (high blood pressure). The medication combines the active ingredients candesartan and olmesartan, which are both angiotensin II receptor antagonists. By inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and neprilysin, candesartan-olmesartan helps to reduce blood pressure and improve symptoms of heart failure. It is typically administered orally twice a day.

What is Candesartan-olmesartan used for?

Candesartan-olmesartan, also known as Candesartan cilexetil/ Olmesartan medoxomil, is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) antihypertensive medication. This dual-acting therapy combines the angiotensin II receptor antagonist candesartan with the angiotensin receptor blocker olmesartan.

Candesartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II on its receptor, leading to vasodilation and a subsequent decrease in blood pressure. On the other hand, olmesartan blocks the action of angiotensin II at multiple receptor binding sites, thereby reducing vasoconstriction and decreasing peripheral resistance. The combination of both drugs aims to provide a synergistic effect, potentially offering greater reductions in blood pressure with fewer side effects compared to monotherapy. As such, candesartan-olmesartan is used for the treatment of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, in adults.

This FDC has been shown to be effective and well-tolerated in clinical studies, demonstrating its potential utility in managing patients with essential hypertension. By combining the mechanisms of action of both components, candesartan-olmesartan may provide a more comprehensive approach to lowering blood pressure and thereby reducing cardiovascular risk factors.
