Cefatrizine

What is Cefatrizine?

Cefatrizine is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It was used in the treatment of various bacterial infections, including those caused by susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, among others. The exact pharmacokinetics and distribution characteristics are unclear, as it has been discontinued.

What is Cefatrizine used for?

Cefatrizine is an orally administered, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic that belongs to the third generation of cephalosporins. It is a beta-lactamase-resistant agent with a spectrum of activity that includes both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This particular drug was designed to be effective against infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Escherichia coli.

Cefatrizine works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through the inhibition of transpeptidase enzymes. This action ultimately leads to the death of the bacteria, effectively treating infections caused by these pathogens. Although not specifically indicated for use in children or as a first-line treatment, cefatrizine has shown efficacy against various infections such as acute bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
