Cefmetazole

What is Cefmetazole?

Cefmetazole is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and respiratory tract infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, ultimately leading to the death of bacteria. Cefmetazole is typically administered intravenously or orally and is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Its effectiveness and safety profile have been demonstrated in clinical trials.

What is Cefmetazole used for?

Cefmetazole, also known as P1369 or S-1371, is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It was first introduced in the 1970s and has been used primarily in Japan and Europe for the treatment of various bacterial infections. As a member of the cephem class of antibiotics, cefmetazole exerts its antibacterial effects through inhibiting cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria, ultimately leading to their death.

Pharmacological Properties

Cefmetazole is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to other cephalosporins. Its efficacy extends to bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus (including some methicillin-resistant strains), and Enterobacter species. Cefmetazole is administered orally and, upon absorption, it distributes to various body tissues where bacteria are most active, such as the urinary tract. The drug’s use may be considered for a wide array of infections, including those affecting the urinary tract, skin, soft tissue, respiratory tract, and bone and joints.

Cefmetazole side effects

• Diarrhea • Vaginal candidiasis • Colitis • Vomiting • Abdominal pain • Allergic reactions (rare) • Increased liver enzymes • Thrombocytopenia (rare) • Leukopenia (rare) • Anaphylaxis (rare)
