Cefotetan

What is Cefotetan?

Cefotetan is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including those caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. Cefotetan has a broad spectrum of activity and is effective against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. It can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly and is commonly used for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

What is Cefotetan used for?

Cefotetan is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, specifically a second-generation long-acting cephem-type antibiotic. It belongs to the class of beta-lactam antibiotics and has been used in the treatment of various bacterial infections.

The mechanism of action of cefotetan involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are essential for bacterial cell division and growth. This inhibition ultimately leads to cell lysis, which is lethal to bacteria. Cefotetan has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including many strains of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and various other organisms.

Cefotetan is typically administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM), usually every 8-12 hours. The drug has been used in the treatment of a range of infections, including urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain types of respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper use and dosage instructions.
