Cefprozil

What is Cefprozil?

Cefprozil is an oral, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used primarily to treat bacterial infections such as acute bronchitis, pharyngitis (sore throat), tonsillitis, and pneumonia. It works by interfering with the bacterial cell wall formation, ultimately leading to bacterial death. Cefprozil is available in both capsule and oral suspension formulations for pediatric use, and its efficacy is established across various age groups, from children to adults.

What is Cefprozil used for?

Cefprozil, also known as ZYRTEC-D, is an oral cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. This second-generation cephalosporin was first approved for use in the United States in 1997 by the FDA under the brand name Cefzil. As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, cefprozil effectively targets and inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae.

Cefprozil is typically administered orally in two dosages: 250mg every 12 hours or 500mg once daily. This antibiotic works by binding to the bacterial cell wall, ultimately leading to cell lysis and death due to the disruption of its structural integrity. The recommended treatment duration for cefprozil varies depending on the severity and type of infection being treated. It is essential to complete the full treatment course to ensure complete recovery from an infection.
