What is Ceftazidime pentahydrate?
Ceftazidime pentahydrate, also known as Fortum, is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, ultimately leading to the death of bacteria and resolution of infection. Ceftazidime pentahydrate is effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive microorganisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other susceptible bacteria.
What is Ceftazidime pentahydrate used for?
Ceftazidime pentahydrate, also known as Fortum, is an extended-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. It belongs to the class of beta-lactam antibiotics and operates by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Ceftazidime pentahydrate has a broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is often resistant to other antibiotics.
Ceftazidime pentahydrate’s mechanism of action involves the binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell wall, preventing cross-linking between peptidoglycan chains and ultimately causing the bacterial cell wall to be disrupted. This results in an inhibition of the bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Ceftazidime pentahydrate has a long half-life compared to other cephalosporins, allowing for once or twice daily dosing. It is administered intravenously and can be used both in community-acquired infections and nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections such as pneumonia, bacteremia, and urinary tract infections.
