What is Diltiazem-amlodipine used for?

Diltiazem-amlodipine, also known as caduet, is a combination medication that belongs to the class of drugs called calcium channel blockers and angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It is used primarily in the management of high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). The medication combines two active ingredients: diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker that works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels, making it easier for them to pump blood efficiently; and amlodipine, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that inhibits the action of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor.

The use of diltiazem-amlodipine in patients with hypertension helps to lower their blood pressure levels by reducing peripheral resistance. The medication also improves symptoms of angina by increasing blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart muscles during exercise or stress, thereby alleviating chest pain. In some cases, it may be prescribed for patients with certain cardiac conditions such as left ventricular hypertrophy, heart failure, or coronary artery disease.

As a combination product, diltiazem-amlodipine should only be used under medical supervision to ensure optimal dosing and minimize the risk of potential side effects. Patients taking this medication are advised to follow their doctor’s instructions carefully regarding dosage, frequency, and any necessary monitoring.
