Eplerenone

What is Eplerenone?

Eplerenone is a synthetic potassium-sparing diuretic used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure, particularly in patients with mild to moderate conditions. It works by antagonizing aldosterone, thereby reducing water retention and blood pressure. Eplerenone has a similar mechanism of action to spironolactone but with fewer side effects such as gynecomastia and hyperkalemia. Its onset of action is relatively quick, making it suitable for patients who require immediate antihypertensive therapy.

What is Eplerenone used for?

Eplerenone is an oral medication that belongs to the class of potassium-sparing diuretics, known as mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists. It is primarily used in the treatment and prevention of hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults, either alone or in combination with other medications. Eplerenone works by blocking the action of aldosterone, a hormone that can lead to fluid retention and increased blood pressure.

Eplerenone has also been shown to be effective in patients with heart failure who are at high risk for cardiovascular events. It may also be used off-label to treat certain conditions such as hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity), and edema (swelling). Eplerenone is usually administered orally once daily, typically in a dose of 25-100 mg.
