Ezetimibe-simvastatin

What is Ezetimibe-simvastatin?

Zetia (ezetimibe) and Zocor (simvastatin) are combined in the fixed-dose tablet, Vytorin. This medication is used to treat high cholesterol and mixed dyslipidemia by reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides in patients who have not responded adequately to diet and lifestyle changes. It works by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine and also through its statin component, which lowers cholesterol production in the liver.

What is Ezetimibe-simvastatin used for?

Ezetimibe-simvastatin is a fixed-dose combination medication that combines two active ingredients, ezetimibe and simvastatin. This medication is used in the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) or mixed dyslipidemia (abnormal levels of different types of cholesterol and triglycerides). The ezetimibe component works by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine, while the simvastatin component belongs to a class of medications known as statins, which help lower cholesterol levels in the blood by reducing the production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol.

The combination of ezetimibe and simvastatin is particularly effective in patients who require both cholesterol absorption inhibition and HMG-CoA reductase inhibition to achieve their desired LDL-C reduction. By combining these two mechanisms of action, ezetimibe-simvastatin offers a potent and comprehensive treatment option for patients with high cholesterol levels or mixed dyslipidemia.
