Flucloxacillin

What is Flucloxacillin?

Flucloxacillin is an oral, broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It has bactericidal activity against beta-lactamase producing and non-producing strains of gram-positive bacteria. Flucloxacillin is used in the treatment of infections such as pneumonia, cellulitis, erysipelas, and osteomyelitis caused by susceptible organisms.

What is Flucloxacillin used for?

Flucloxacillin, also known as Floxapen or Flucloxacillin Sodium, is an antibiotic medication that belongs to the class of beta-lactamase-resistant penicillins. It was first synthesized in the 1950s by a team of researchers at Beecham Pharmaceuticals and has been used for treating various bacterial infections since its approval by regulatory authorities.

Flucloxacillin functions as a bacteriostatic agent, inhibiting cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria through interference with the penicillin-binding proteins. This action prevents the bacterial cells from producing their own peptidoglycan layer, leading to cellular lysis and death. The antibiotic’s spectrum of activity encompasses both Gram-positive cocci (such as Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-positive bacilli (including certain strains of Clostridium).
