Fluvastatin

What is Fluvastatin?

Fluvastatin is an oral antihyperlipidemic medication that belongs to the statin class of drugs. It works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a key role in cholesterol production within the liver. By reducing hepatic cholesterol synthesis, fluvastatin decreases the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol in the blood, while also slightly increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol and lowering triglyceride levels. This medication is used to treat primary hyperlipidemia and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

What is Fluvastatin used for?

Fluvastatin is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent that belongs to the class of drugs known as statins. It works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a crucial role in the production of cholesterol in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, fluvastatin reduces the synthesis of cholesterol and increases the elimination of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol from the body.

Fluvastatin is commonly prescribed to patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease, including those with hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerotic disease, or who have experienced a myocardial infarction. By lowering LDL cholesterol levels, fluvastatin helps reduce the risk of cardiac events and mortality associated with coronary heart disease. The recommended dosage for fluvastatin varies depending on the individual’s requirements, but it is usually initiated at 40-80 mg once daily in the evening to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
