Fluzone High-Dose

What is Fluzone High-Dose?

Fluzone High-Dose is an inactivated influenza vaccine, commonly referred to as the flu shot, specifically designed for individuals 65 years of age and older. It contains higher concentrations of antigen than standard flu vaccines, providing increased protection against the three serotypes (A and B) of the influenza virus that are most likely to circulate during each flu season. The vaccine is administered via injection into a muscle, typically in the arm, and helps stimulate the body’s immune response to produce antibodies against the influenza virus, thereby reducing the risk of contracting influenza.

What is Fluzone High-Dose used for?

Fluzone High-Dose is a vaccine preparation designed specifically for the prevention of influenza (the flu) in adults aged 65 years and older. This high-dose formulation was developed to provide enhanced protection against seasonal flu, taking into account the diminished immune response associated with aging.

In contrast to traditional flu vaccines that contain 15 micrograms of hemagglutinin (HA), Fluzone High-Dose contains three times the HA antigen at a dose of 60 micrograms. This increased amount of antigen is aimed at stimulating a stronger, more robust immune response in older adults, thereby providing greater protection against influenza viruses. By boosting the body’s defenses against flu infection, Fluzone High-Dose helps to prevent hospitalizations and complications associated with severe seasonal flu cases among seniors. As an annual vaccine recommendation, it plays a critical role in public health efforts to safeguard the well-being of this vulnerable age group during peak flu seasons.
