Cefotaxime

What is Cefotaxime?

Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that belongs to the beta-lactam class of medications. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of susceptible microorganisms. Cefotaxime has broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including those causing pneumonia, meningitis, and skin infections. It is often used in combination with other antibiotics to treat complicated urinary tract infections and sepsis.

What is Cefotaxime used for?

Cefotaxime, also known as Cefotaxime Sodium or CTX, is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic medication used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It belongs to the beta-lactam class of antibiotics and works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria, ultimately leading to their death. Cefotaxime has a broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including those resistant to other cephalosporins.

Cefotaxime is often used to treat severe infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, and Escherichia coli. It is typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8-12 hours. The drug’s effectiveness against a wide range of bacterial pathogens, including those resistant to other antibiotics, has made it an important option in the treatment of various infectious diseases. However, like all cephalosporins, Cefotaxime should be used with caution and in compliance with local or national guidelines to prevent the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
