Fluarix

What is Fluarix?

Influenza Vaccine, Inactivated/Whole Virion (Fluarix) is an injectable vaccine used to protect against four different strains of the flu virus. It contains inactivated whole viruses that cannot cause infection but still stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies and provide immunity against influenza. The vaccine is recommended for individuals six months of age and older who have not previously been vaccinated with Fluarix or similar vaccines, and it should be administered annually to maintain immunity.

What is Fluarix used for?

Fluarix is an inactivated influenza vaccine, also known as a flu shot, that protects against the influenza virus. This vaccine is designed to stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies against specific strains of the flu virus, thereby providing immunity and preventing infection. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a type A or B virus, which can lead to symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches.

Fluarix contains inactivated influenza viruses that have been isolated from infected individuals and grown in a laboratory. These inactivated viruses are then processed into a vaccine that is administered via injection. Fluarix typically protects against two or three strains of the flu virus for a specific season, as recommended by health authorities such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The vaccine is available for use in individuals six months through 49 years of age and can be used to provide protection in people with certain health conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease, or weakened immune systems.
